Objectives

The main research objectives of the project are:

1.

To develop a suit of models grounded on Geographical Information Systems to identify areas of high ecological value that are vulnerable to chemical pollution.

2.

To develop tools to assess the risk of contaminants in coastal wetlands using historical data and considering the main pollution emission sources.

3.

To assess the impact of climate change on the resilience of aquatic populations and communities to pollution in Mediterranean wetlands.

4.

To develop ecological models that are capable to predict the impact of chemical pollution and climate change on key ecological processes and on the ecosystem services that are related to them.

5.

To provide a decision support system for Mediterranean wetlands that can be used to derive pollution prevention and mitigation measures to protect aquatic biodiversity.
